L'ITALIA NON PUO' RINUNCIARE AGLI OUTSIDER
ITALY CANNOT GO WITHOUT ITS OUTSIDERS

Italy is different. It is different from the country so many dream about, the country which casts its spell on the foreigners on holiday, the country we would like to live in. Italy is hard on those who "don't count", it is not a country used to worship the self made man (or woman). Rather the opposite, those who come from the lower circles, those who see things differently are looked upon with suspicion: who do they work for, what do they really mean?
But this is actually the most interesting part of the country: Italy's Outsiders. It's the 60% of the population, mostly women and young. Here in Italy, if you are not a male, and aged, you are not taken into account, not really. Maybe you are good for fun, for a distraction, but not for a real Change (if you know what I mean).
Power, and all that it implies (politics, money, education, culture, social rank, balance in the family) is all in the hands of a little group of a few thousands males, aged males, 60 years old on average. They go on choosing, as consultants, as possible successors, people who look exactly like them. Their conform. Those who are different can be smart, but if they are outsiders, hardly will they ever be listened.
What could be said is: too bad for them! We live in democracies, why don't these people step forward? They have the strenght, the possibility to do so. So, it is also their fault, if nobody listens! They just complain!
I don't agree: it is too bad for Italy! Italy goes along without more than half of its own resources, and the people who are younger, stronger, new energies, new ideas! Italy needs its outsider to make things work better, to make the economy, politics, the labour market, work. This is what "LA SFIDA DEGLI OUTSIDER", "outsiders' challenge" is about.
I have decided to write about them, maybe because I still feel as an outsider myself, even though for decades I thought it was not so. We, "girls", we often delude ourselves saying that opportunities are equal for everybody. We thought we fought on an equal footing. Then, in the end, we realize it is not so. At the beginning we are not considered because we are too young and unexperienced, afterwards because we are women.
La sfida degli outsider, the outsiders' challenge, is a political book, a book that calls for an alliance, for a battle. If we win, Italy will thank us.

L’Italia è diversa. E’ diversa da quel paese che in tanti sognano, quello che credono di vedere gli stranieri che vengono in vacanza, quello nel quale noi vorremmo vivere. L’Italia è dura con chi non fa parte dei gruppi che contano, e non è un paese abituato ad ammirare chi viene fuori dal nulla. Anzi, chi propone una visione diversa dal previsto viene guardato sempre con sospetto: chissà che cosa ”veramente” vuole dire....
Eppure questa Italia di Outsider è l’Italia più interessante. E’ composta da oltre il 60% della popolazione e per lo più da donne e ragazzi, che contano poco o niente, contrariamente a quello che succede nel resto del mondo occidentale. Lo sguardo diverso, qui da noi, non è gradito. Se non si è maschi, e "di peso", non si viene presi sul serio. La novità, il fuori dal coro, può suscitare tutt’al più un effimero divertimento. Ma non un cambiamento.
Il potere, con tutto ciò che ne consegue (e cioè la politica, i soldi, la cultura, l’importanza sociale e perfino in famiglia) appartiene per lo più a un gruppo di poche migliaia di maschi intorno ai sessant’anni. E loro continuano a scegliere, come collaboratori e come possibili successori, i loro simili. Questo è un problema oviamente per tutti quelli che non riescono a sfondare questo muro. Possono essere, bravi, bravissimi, volenterosi, pieni di energia, ma se sono outsider, difficilmente riusciranno perfino a farsi ascoltare.
Ma si potrebbe dire che la colpa è di queste persone, che questi outsider che cosa fanno per farsi avanti? SI lamentano e basta? PEGGIO PER LORO! No, purtroppo è peggio per l'Italia, che rinuncia a oltre la metà delle proprie risorse, che non utilizza idee nuove, energie nuove, anzi le lascia marcire, ripercorrendo sempre le stesse strade. Gli outsider servono al Paese per far funzionare l'economi,a i servizi, la politica. Ecco di che cosa si occupa La sfida degli Outsider.
Di loro ho deciso di occuparmi. Forse perché anche io mi sento un’outsider. Per decenni ho creduto che non fosse così. Noi ”ragazze” spesso ci illudiamo che ci siano per tutti le stesse opportunità. Che anche noi combatteremo ad armi pari con tutti gli altri. Poi, a poco a poco, ci accorgiamo che non è così. E che se prima non trovavamo abbastanza credito perché troppo giovani, dopo succede perché donne.
Ecco perché ho scritto LA SFIDA DEGLI OUTSIDER, un libro ”politico”, che vorrebbe incitare anche tanti di noi a non accettare passivamente di essere tali, a riconoscere i pochi (ma ci sono, qua e là), i pochi segnali di cambiamento e premiarli. Alleiamoci, combattiamo, rompiamo le scatole. E’ l’unico modo. E poi l’Italia ci ringrazierà.
