WHAT ABOUT TEMPORARY WORK?

I spoke with an american girl today, Shelley, 24, coming from Minnesota, United States. She is looking for a job in Italy at the moment, and I was trying to explain her what's all the fuss about temporary work in Italy. I told her that young people in Italy find more and more temporary jobs and that makes them anxious about their future. In the past people here used to think of a job as something that will last for their whole lives. She was listening to me wide-eyed and with a funny face. "So, what?", she said. Well, you know, this has become a big issue in Italy, I pressed on. But she couldn't understand. "Well, I have alredy had different jobs in my life, and as a student I used to do all sorts of different jobs back at the University", she answered. I tried to make it a little clearer saying that the opposite of a temporary job is when you work for a firm and cannot be fired, no matter what. Was she surprised! I found myself in the akward position of having to explain the torments of italian young people to a person that regarded all this only as a bigger opportunity. Something positive, after all. Which is what I mostly think! "More temporary work means more opportunities" she concluded.
I know, I know, our culture, our tradition is different but.... Has any young Italian ever tried to talk about it with an american guy? Or with a british, irish or northern european, for that matter. Why not try?
